The winter I turned twenty-five, my back gave out from too many years hunched over a desk, and a kind old masseuse in Ranelagh put me right in three sessions. I was so amazed by what a pair of hands could do that I asked her to teach me. She did, patiently, for nearly two years. I still think of her every time I warm the oil.
