Sunset on the Hulhumalé beachfront: kids racing bicycles along the promenade, a seaplane buzzing low over the lagoon, and me stretched out on the sand with my very long black hair spread around me like a towel I forgot to bring. The sky goes orange, then pink, then a colour nobody has named yet. That's when I start planning my evening, and my evenings are rarely quiet. I'm Ziyana, thirty-one, Maldivian, born on these islands and very much at home in the water. I speak Dhivehi and English, and I have a cheeky streak that I've given up trying to hide.
